Wind Power Industry
Due to the complex design of wind turbines and their height in open areas, this structure is highly susceptible to lightning strikes. Therefore, lightning and surge protection for wind turbines is particularly important. Inside the wind turbine, there are numerous sensitive electrical and electronic devices. Protecting against lightning-induced electromagnetic pulses and lightning waves that may interfere with and damage electronic facilities is crucial to ensuring the long-term availability of wind turbines.
Ultra-high-rise Buildings
Direct or nearby lightning strikes can cause lightning to enter buildings, adjacent facilities, or even into buildings through power distribution cables, communication lines, and data cables. The lightning current from a direct strike that enters a building can cause a significant potential rise relative to the grounding equipment. The voltage drop across the grounding resistance and the potential rise in the surrounding environment create surges, which are among the greatest threats to the building's electrical system. Surges can also be induced in the building’s electrical installations, interconnected systems, and equipment due to the electromagnetic field generated by lightning.
Photovoltaic System
Lightning-induced surges are a major cause of damage to photovoltaic systems. Surges caused by lightning can damage photovoltaic modules and inverters, which severely impact the operation of the equipment and result in significant economic losses. To ensure the safety and stability of solar power plants, appropriate lightning protection measures must be implemented.
Historical Sites and Landmarks
Historical sites and landmarks are often located in open areas or elevated terrains, making them more susceptible to lightning strikes. Localized lightning, which is generated quickly, is especially dangerous due to its sudden onset and severe impact. At historical sites and landmarks, protection extends beyond people to include ancient buildings and monuments, particularly those constructed from flammable materials such as wood. Lightning protection is a crucial aspect of ensuring the safety of tourist attractions and historical sites.
Urban Complex
Direct or nearby lightning strikes can cause lightning to enter buildings, adjacent facilities, or even penetrate buildings through power distribution cables, communication lines, and data cables. Lightning currents from a direct strike that enter a building can cause a significant potential rise relative to the grounding equipment. The voltage drop across the grounding resistance and the potential rise in the surrounding environment can create surges, which are among the greatest threats to the building's electrical system. Surges can also be induced in the building’s electrical installations, interconnected systems, and equipment due to the electromagnetic field generated by lightning.
Mobile Base Station
Mobile communication base stations are often located in elevated areas, increasing the likelihood that the communication equipment rooms and transmission towers will be struck by lightning. The foundation of base station construction is typically made of rock, which results in high grounding resistance and makes it difficult for lightning to discharge. The base station's AC power supply lines are relatively long and have complex electrical loads, which severely impacts the safety of the communication power supply system. The critical equipment at base stations consists of microelectronic devices that are very sensitive to various forms of lightning overvoltages, power system operating overvoltages, electrostatic discharge, and electromagnetic interference, making them susceptible to damage.
Ancient Buildings
Ancient buildings and monuments, especially those constructed from flammable materials like wood, require appropriate protective measures to mitigate fire hazards. Ancient buildings must undergo a potential lightning risk assessment and implement suitable protective measures to achieve effective protection.
System Security
The era of big data requires continuous data exchange, monitoring, and control within secure networks. According to system requirements, data must not only be transmitted reliably and accurately but also be available around the clock. Therefore, protecting secure networks from lightning threats is of utmost importance.
Airport
Airports are typically situated in open, flat areas, making their terminals, control towers, hangars, weather stations, and aircraft prominent structures that are more likely to be struck by lightning. Localized lightning, which develops quickly and is highly explosive, poses an even greater threat. Modern airports are equipped with numerous critical communication devices and other electronic facilities. Protecting against lightning electromagnetic pulses and surges that can interfere with and damage electronic systems is crucial for ensuring reliable communication operations and flight safety.
Railway Transit
Many rail transit systems are equipped with a large number of sensitive electrical and electronic devices, and the buildings, systems, and associated electronic equipment themselves are vulnerable to lightning strikes and other sources of electromagnetic interference. In daily operations, rail transit systems are affected by overvoltages caused by lightning surges, power system faults, and the relatively complex electromagnetic environment in lines and stations. These factors can adversely impact the stable operation of the system to some extent.
Petrochemical Industry
The petrochemical industry, due to its flammable, explosive, and high-risk nature, has very high requirements for lightning protection. Lightning-induced electromagnetic pulses, induced overvoltage, or direct lightning strikes can lead to equipment damage, pipeline leaks, and even severe fires and explosions. Therefore, petrochemical companies need comprehensive and systematic lightning protection measures to ensure safe production.
